Happy Fourth of July! We live in this great nation where we have so many freedoms. One of those freedoms is the availability of fireworks. However, fireworks and grass can be a bad combination.
With the fairly recent loosening of fireworks laws in Michigan, we have seen the number of fireworks in the area increase. With that, damage to property, including grass, have also increased because of it. I just want to remind everyone that fireworks do have the potential to start things, including grass on fire. So I ask that if you are using fireworks, please be careful, not only for yourself, but for others, and everyone’s property.
Fire on grass can burn the growing points of the grass plant right off, even though the growing point is just below the soil surface. With the growing point gone, the plant will not be able to survive and will die off. If this happens, then that area of grass will have to be replanted. Dry grass, like the kind we can get in the middle of the summer is especially vulnerable to being burnt. The moral of the story is please be careful when using fireworks.
Have a happy and safe Fourth of July! Remember that fireworks and grass do not mix, and remember to be safe.
