Snow, however beautiful can have it problems. Although it provides way more benefits to the landscape than its problems, it can still be a nuisance from time to time. There are a few drawbacks of snow.
If the weight of the snow becomes too great, some smaller and weaker plants may have a little trouble holding onto the snow. This is especially true after a very wet and heavy snow or after an ice storm. The weight of the snow can also be a problem for larger plants when there is a very early snow storm and the leaves are still on the trees.
More snow on the ground means it is harder for some wildlife to find food. Also, with more snow on the ground, the wildlife can use the snow to climb to higher parts of the plants and eat some of the newer, tender parts of the plants.
Potential flooding can be an issue when large amounts of snow melt very quickly. This can wash away ground covers and soil. Luckily this is mostly a problem confined to quick melt downs of the snow pack.
Snow can be aesthetically unpleasing once it starts to melt. The snow turns dirty looking with all of the road grime mixed in. Fortunately, this is just an aesthetics problem, but I would say is a big drawback of snow.
The drawbacks of snow are there. However, snow does provide some benefits. We just have to take the good with the bad, as we cannot control the weather. We just have to work with it.
